Crazy About Cups

Just yesterday, Gabe and i went shopping to stock up on his food. In the process, i got him a cute lil Winnie The Pooh cup. It's the normal mug type with no sprouts or straw. The, i went home and did a lil housekeeping for his stuffs, and realised, over the year, i bought quite a number of cups for him....all trial n error.

We had been searching for a perfect cup, thus the testings. As you know, DS kids have a hard time in terms of drinking from cups, be it holding it by themselves or using straws, etc. Below are the 6 different cups Gabe had:

All different colors to...so pretty hor???

Alright, why so many yah...err coz we were really really confused as to which type is best for Gabe and is easiest for him to learn how to drink. And one of them, due to Mummy's kiasu attitude thinking Gabe would be ready for it...

Alrighty, the first 3 cups you see below

The first one, RED straw cup...Mummy's fault. I thought i could perhaps teach Gabe to try n use a straw much earlier...wrong move, this cup's straw was so hard to suck, coz you have to use ur lips to squeeze the straw slightly, opening the straw to allow water to come up....even i had a damned hard time...so obviously Gabe isn't gonna be able to use it...

The 2nd cup, yellow one. I thought that because the nipple resembled that of his milk bottle slightly, he'd perhaps have an easier time adapting..again, wrong...Gabe hated it, refused to even try to drink..his mouth touched the nipple, he immediately turned away...sigh...another down the drain.

The 3rd one, is a Honey Bear straw cup, specially bought online from Talk Tools, a company selling special therapy tools for kids who have speech problems. Yeah i know Gabe will not be able to learn to suck a straw so young, but the good thing is that I can control the flow by pressing the Honey Bear's tummy...yup..cute huh...And this was a good buy. Till yesterday we were using it. It was so handy, especially outside. But, after talking to some of Gabe's teacher and the Portage instructor, I felt perhaps it was better to use a cup for Gabe to achieve consistency. It's pointless to use a straw now, better to focus on teaching him to use a cup.

Purple cup...also from Talk Tools, good buy too....it's a recessed cup with a lid that has 2 different holes for water to come out from. Slow flow or a faster flow. We had been using this at home during feeding times with meals as Gabe loves the cup. The downside to this is that i couldn;t bring it out as the water would pour out from the holes. So it wasn't so handy.

Middle yellow cup. This i initially thought was good and Gabe would like it, coz the nipple was soft. Ahahha, he hated it at first touch..made a face and turned away. If i tried again he'd bit the tip really hard and prevent any water from flowing out...sigh...

LAst cup, with sprout, a sippy cup...actually Er-Yi gave this as a gift along with a plate set...unfortunately, Er-Yi...sippy cups aren't good for DS kids...they will keep chewing their gums on it..no good...and the cover too lose, always drop off...

So, after all those wrong cups, i decided we needed to have 1 cup only, to be consistent. To use at meal times and also handy outside. That's why we settled (maybe for now...) for this

Easy to use, just like a cup, and has lid to prevent spills. Used it today, and so far so good, Gabe stared at it for sometime, but he managed to get used to it after a few sips...He still has lots of training to do before he can fully hold the cup by himself and drink without spilling much of it from his mouth. But i guess now that we've found a good cup, he'll get there. We have a feeding therapy session end August so i'll bring this cup to see if they approve of it, otherwise it's another new cup?
